Course Description

Basic Antenna Concepts – Basics is the first part of a two-part series.  The Basics class provides a fundamental and intuitive understanding of how antenna systems work.  The class explores the basics of electromagnetic fields and radiation, how antennas radiate and receive, how the physics works for different architectures, and why we build different antennas for different applications

Course Content

ELECTROMAGNETICS AND THE BASICS OF RADIATION 

  • Review of required Math and Electrical Engineering  
  • Review of Transmission Lines and Basic Antenna Principles 

ANTENNA ARCHITECTURES 

  • Low, Medium, and High Gain Antenna Architectures with numerous examples

MATERIALS: 

Required (student must provide) 

  • None for the in-person offerings 
  • A computer suitable to live stream the Webex meetings for the online offerings 

Provided (student will receive)

  • For the in-person class:  a printed book containing all of the slides along with a CD/DVD of digital copies of the slides 
  • For the online class:  A link for the student to download all of the digital copies of the slides

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for students who have had little exposure to antenna systems.  The class is provided at the undergraduate level and no formal RF nor electrical engineering training is required.  The class is intended to provide an entry into the GTPE Certificate Programs in Antenna Engineering and Phased Array Antenna Engineering.  The class is appropriate for entry-level engineers, technicians, engineers or technical managers who specialized in other disciplines and desire cross-training in antenna systems.
