Infrared Technology and Applications - Open Access

Course Description

   In the Infrared Technology and Applications - Open Access course, you will explore infrared systems engineering with an emphasis on military systems. Examine problem-solving, design, and analysis techniques with emphasis on experience-based rules of thumb and develop a perspective for assessing the promise of new infrared technologies. Not only will you gain an understanding of how infrared and electro-optical systems operate, but also key physical principles, performance limitations of current infrared systems, issues pacing the development of new systems, and key component technologies.

Course Content

BASIC INFRARED THEORY

  • Principles of infrared radiation and target signatures
  • Comparisons of spectral bands used for imaging
  • Impact of environmental conditions on infrared sensors

INFRARED IMAGING SYSTEMS

  • Infrared sensor design principles through 3rd Generation devices
  • Sensors that utilize ambient light or active illumination (LIDAR)
  • Video examples from numerous imaging systems

TERMINAL HOMING SEEKERS AND VIDEO TRACKERS

  • Imaging and non-imaging seeker design approaches
  • Guidance laws and tracking concepts for seekers, including countermeasure implications
  • Current and future trends in infrared search and track (IRST) and seeker technology

KEY IMAGING SYSTEM COMPONENTS

  • Infrared optical design and impacts on system performance
  • Infrared detector technology and focal plane arrays
  • Video tracker techniques and implementations

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS

  • Evaluation tools and key metrics for modeling imaging systems
  • Techniques for analyzing imaging system range performance
  • Approaches to systems engineering for electro-optical and infrared systems
